About Us

Arizona Dream Catchers Equestrians was founded in 1995 by Tim and Christina Vanda in Apache Junction, Arizona. The Vandas, having a small ranch and horses, wanted to provide others with enjoyment and benefits that horses had brought their son Thomas, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Tim Vanda, a master level special education teacher brought many of the academic and educational components to the program. Christina Vanda, a clinical social worker and adaptive recreation specialist, brought the fun and physical aspects. Together they created a winning team, committed to helping others. The initial fifteen students were provided free weekly lessons by a small volunteer base and four horses.

We We Are Today

The Arizona Dream Catcher Equestrians now provide over 1800 hours of free therapeutic riding to 150 students each riding season. Students come from special education departments of several area schools, group homes, rehabilitation centers and the private sector. We partner in a collaborative effort with Special Olympics International, 4-H Juvenile Probation, Honor Society Students, Service Learning Projects and several At Risk youth groups. Our summer camp in the White Mountains, which opened in 2002, provides a unique inclusive family camping experience.
